Nortel Norstar Support & Programming

Nortel went under in 2009. Avaya took the enterprise business and has since wound Norstar down. Ask your carrier about it today and most will tell you the system is end-of-life and quote you a replacement.

The system still works. If yours is doing what you need it to do, there is no reason to rip it out because a vendor stopped answering the phone.

Our technicians program and maintain Norstar systems every week. Most of what goes wrong on one can be fixed remotely, usually the same day.

What we do on Norstar systems

  • Program a new or replacement set — extension, display name, line appearances, and a button layout that matches the phones already on your desks
  • Moves, adds and changes when staff turn over
  • Voicemail boxes, greetings, auto-attendant and call routing
  • Work out why a set is dead, will not ring, or rings at the wrong desk
  • Recover programming after a power event or a swapped-out KSU
  • Write down what you actually have, so the next person is not guessing

We work on Modular ICS, Compact ICS and the CICS/MICS cabinets, and across the T-series and M-series handset range.

Problems we get called about

  • A phone has gone dead and nobody knows how it was programmed
  • You hired someone and there is no extension for them
  • Calls ring at the wrong desk after hours
  • The auto-attendant still names an employee who left years ago
  • Half the lines stopped working after an outage
  • Nobody has the installer password

That last one is worth saying plainly: a lost installer password is not the end of the system. It is a common call and we can usually get back in.

How remote support works

  1. Tell us what the system is doing and what it is — model, rough age, how many sets.
  2. We arrange a window with you and sort out how we get in.
  3. We do the work and tell you what we found, in plain language.

If the job turns out smaller than you bought, we refund the difference. If it turns out much bigger, we stop and tell you before spending your money.

What it costs

$185 per hour. 30-minute minimum, then billed in 15-minute increments. Most moves, adds and changes land inside the minimum.

Multi-site work and system migrations are quoted rather than billed hourly.

Handsets and parts

We stock renewed Norstar-compatible handsets, bench-tested and covered by warranty, so a dead set does not mean a dead system.

Should you keep it or replace it?

We will tell you honestly. A Norstar that does what you need, on lines you are happy with, is worth keeping — you already own it, and replacement handsets cost a fraction of new. Where it stops making sense is if you need remote workers, mobile integration, or features the platform was never built for. We would rather say that than sell you support on a system you should be moving off.
